Large optical nonlinearity induced by singlet fission in pentacene films.

چکیده
By creating two triplet excitons from one photo-excited singlet exciton, singlet fission in organic semiconductors has drawn tremendous attention for its potential applications in boosting the efficiency of solar conversion. Here, we show that this carrier-multiplication effect can also be used to dramatically improve the nonlinear optical response in organic materials. We have observed large optical nonlinearity with a magnitude of χ((3)) up to 10(-9) esu in pentacene films, which is further shown to be a result of singlet fission by monitoring the temporal dynamics. The potential application of such efficient nonlinear optical response has been demonstrated with a singlet-fission-induced polarization rotation.

Photoexcited carrier relaxation dynamics in pentacene probed by ultrafast optical spectroscopy Influence of morphology on relaxation processes
We present a comparative study of ultrafast photoexcited state relaxation in pentacene single crystals and in pure and C60-doped pentacene films using optical pump-probe spectroscopy. The photoinduced absorption spectra in pentacene crystals is consistent with a dominant singlet–triplet fission decay channel for above-gap excitation. This decay channel is suppressed in thin films and even furth...
متن کاملUnified model for singlet fission within a non-conjugated covalent pentacene dimer
When molecular dimers, crystalline films or molecular aggregates absorb a photon to produce a singlet exciton, spin-allowed singlet fission may produce two triplet excitons that can be used to generate two electron-hole pairs, leading to a predicted ∼50% enhancement in maximum solar cell performance. The singlet fission mechanism is still not well understood. Here we report on the use of time-r...

We present a comparative study of ultrafast photoconversion dynamics in tetracene (Tc) and pentacene (Pc) single crystals and Pc films using optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Photoinduced absorption in Tc and Pc crystals is activated and temperature-independent, respectively, demonstrating dominant singlet-triplet exciton fission. In Pc films (as well as C60-doped films) this decay channel is su...

Singlet fission, the conversion of a singlet excitation into two triplet excitations, is a viable route to improved solar-cell efficiency. Despite active efforts to understand the singlet fission mechanism, which would aid in the rational design of new materials, a comprehensive understanding of mechanistic principles is still lacking. Here, we present the first study of singlet fission in crys...

The ultrafast spectroscopy of single domains of polycrystalline films of TIPS-pentacene, a small-molecule organic semiconductor of interest in electronic and photovoltaic applications, is investigated using transient absorption microscopy. Individual domains are distinguished by their different polarization-dependent linear and nonlinear optical responses. As compared to bulk measurements, we s...
